My working hypothesis — We are All. Dead and in HELL. Yes, life on Earth is the only Hell dear Ones. Furthermore, unlike what the Judeo-Christian Bible has to say on the matter life as an animal is not a reward — it’s a punishment.

I’d strongly disagree with the first point: “Everyone is miserable”. It’s easy to lose sight of how much we have achieved over the past century or so. On just about any dimension you can think of – warfare, crime, income, education, transportation, worker safety, health – the C21st is far more hospitable to the average human than any other time. We are living in the most peaceful time in human history (lowest deaths from violence/year) and the typical human being is 20 times materially wealthier than 100 years ago. And of course, money is not all that matters, but increases in real GDP per capita also correlate to improvements in those things money can’t buy. Health. Happiness. Education. Sure, economic progress sometimes comes at an environmental cost, but that’s no reason to write off the whole system! With strict environmental regulations and incentives to protect the environment, it’s perfectly possible to live in harmony with the natural world.

It’s a fact of life that people love to complain, particularly about how terrible the modern world is compared with the past. They are nearly always wrong.

This is the best thing I have ever read. It perfectly encapsulates everything I have been trying to say for years. Too bad the rest of the world seems too drugged and stupid to wake up – which, incidentally, is not their fault, but simply an unfortunate consequence of the system we’re all born into.

I see the “Dark Mountain” stuff as a necessary counterbalance to stuff like the Venus project. What if technology *doesn’t* solve all of our problems? What then?

So much I could say… but not here as a comment.

Have you heard of the Venus Project? A resource based economy as a future for humanity. I do not know much about it, it may just be a misinformed soul or a scam, but when reading your post it made me think of it and – who knows? There may be something there to add to your thinking. Your post may be idealistic and I am glad you don’t care. The ability to see what is possible without compromise and the reality we live in without lying to ourselves is a gift few of us see as such anymore.

I just spent the day in the finance world seeing the impact of some of what you describe – you are not going to get lots of people agreeing to you ‘catchy’ title!
