I suspect there’s as many explanations as there is voters – really I’m just tying facts I am aware of into a story that makes sense to me.

(It occurs to me that there is probably some fun participant research to be done here – would that we had a government interested in SocSci research)

Try the simpler explanation than Tory subtleties, which is reasonably well off demographics being fundamentally selfish, and the successful duping of the reverse-snobbishness of the poor.
